Malaise Traps - Townes Style

Malaise Traps - Townes Style
< 8 Enlarged Images >
This series of Malaise traps are fast and easy to setup. Included with this trap is the addition of a framework of shock-corded poles, permitting quick installation. All you need to do is to simply hook clips onto provided poles. As the malaise trap is so easy to assemble, it can be repositioned anytime and used on a short-term basis.

The trap itself is nearly freestanding, requiring a minimum of two guy ropes, although we find that three guy ropes on the front, and one on the back was ideal.
However, the fact that it only requires two guy ropes can save time for those who need to deploy many Malaise traps in habitats where trees and bushes are hard to reach.

One advantage of the Malaise trap is that it efficiently catches flying insects such as Hymenoptera and Diptera. Since it does not, by itself, attract insects, placement of a Malaise trap can significantly affect the number of insects caught.

This Townes Style Malaise trap is ideal for scientists experienced with the situation and dramas of setting up a Malaise trap when the ideal location has no trees to supply support.
That being said, if necessary, the Malaise trap can be set up without provided poles. The trap itself provides all the loops needed for traditional installation: either supported with poles or hanging from trees.
