Traps - Berlese Funnel

Berlese funnels are effective tools for separating leaf litter and humus from photophobic insects and arachnids.

This pop-up style of Berlese Funnel is far more compact than the traditional style and is designed to let moisture evaporate naturally through the netting in the top compartment. It can quite quickly extract the soil dwelling insects without requiring a heat source. This applies particularly when only a thin layer of leaf litter/humus is placed on the gauze.

Use of a light bulb (not supplied) is also possible: simply clinch top opening around the base of the lamp socket or place the heat source to radiate into the funnel.

The pop-up Berlese Funnel consists of 6 parts: Top compartment, Gauze, Funnel, Connector, collecting tube and black carry bag.

Top compartment

White Nylon netting (104 x 94 mesh/square inch) that allows light to enter and moisture to evaporate quickly

Gauze

The gauze is of two layers of black Polyester netting (mesh aperture about 2.5mm).
- One layer is sewn to foldable metal ring that holds the Berlese funnel open.
- The second layer is movable, enabling adjustment of the gauze aperture.

Bottom funnel

Tube connector

constructed from PE plastic and connects the funnel to a collecting tube. The fast release design of the tube connector permits cleaning of overlooked specimens from the bottom opening

Eppendorf tubes

Each pop-up Berlese funnel comes with two Eppendorf tubes (15 ml and 50 ml) for collection containers. Other containers may be tied onto the connector if the expected collection amount is large

Carry Bag

The black Nylon cloth carrying bag may be wrapped over the collecting tube to block any light from the bottom collector thus assisting in boosting the extraction of the specimens
