Traps - Mosquito Traps

There are two types available. There is the standard model which is type PR101-MKII (E67A), and model PR103 (E602) which has additional features including a photoswitch and closing gates.

Both are portable and lightweight with CO2 gas and the mini-light being used as the attractant. With the mini-light, mosquitoes are orientated to the centre of the trap and blown into the catch bag.

Batteries are not supplied with the traps.

Mosquito Trap Redesigned Model PR101-MK2
This redesigned model means that the fan motor will be of a higher operating voltage, now 3 volts as opposed to 1.5 volts as has been the case with the PR101 model.

Essentially, there is no obvious difference between the new and old models. They both have exactly the same appearance and all parts except the motor.

The motor types are not directly interchangeable between the models.

For a very limited time, a small number of the original motors, (PR101 model) will be available to customers as replacements.

For those people who, in the future, may wish to have their old traps (PR101 model) converted to the new system, this service will be made available. It involves a deal of re-working and re- wiring. Please request quote for this service. E67AMKII Model PR101

This trap consists of three sections.

Top
Topmost consists of a gallon size container protected with black plastic coating to prevent rust. It is insulated inside with foamed urethane. It is used primarily as a carry pack for the trap (the middle section slides into this container) and an insulated chamber for the CO2 attractant. The dimensions of the container are: 210mm high x 180mm diameter.

Middle
The middle section consists of the trap mechanism, PVC tube, dry cell battery holders, miniature lamp, motor and propeller.
A moth excluder is an optional extra.
The dimensions of this section are: 155mm high x 80mm diameter.

Bottom
The bottom section consists of the catch bag, clips & disc which acts as a spreader.

PR101 Notes

Two (2) D cell batteries are required for the PR101. Nickel cadmium batteries are not recommended. They have a lower terminal voltage (1.2v) than conventional dry alkaline batteries (1.5v) also they do not, in spite of claims, match the capabilities of the dry cells in most respects.
It is for these reasons that the instruction sheet recommends the use of Energiser or Duracel batteries.
Experiments have shown that even with cheaper type dry cells, running times are in the order of 11 to 12 hours continuous.
The PR103 has a closing mechanism which prevents the mosquitoes from escaping should the batteries fail. However, with the PR101, there is no such mechanism so in this situation, the mosquitoes escape.

E601 Model PR103
This model has the additional feature of a photoswitch which turns the trap off at dawn and back on again at nightfall. It is designed for use with either a 6 volt, lead acid, gel type battery. This is preferred particularly if the trap is to turn itself back on automatically. Alternatively, four (4) dry cell batteries or rechargeable nickel cadmium batteries (high rate) can be used.

If the batteries cease to operate, (average life 8 hours for 4 dry cell batteries), the gate will automatically close, thus preventing the escape of the trapped insects.
If left unattended, the photoswitch turns the trap off at dawn and back on again at nightfall. When the trap turns off, the self closing gate operates preventing the escape of the trapped insects. The automatic motor and lamp shut off conserves the life of the batteries.

The unit has a top cover which is designed for protection from rain. A large catch bag is employed. An insulated dry ice container is provided which is attached above the rain shield. Hanging clips are included.

E68APP – Supplementary Mosquito Trap Catch Bucket
An optional extra. It is a clear plastic catch bucket which easily ties onto the mosquito trap. The bucket (150mm high x 170mm diameter) allows for a bigger catch than the standard catch bag.

The mosquitoes are fed into the bucket by means of a 23cm length of fine mesh white netting.

Longevity of the Mosquitoes
Should the longevity of the mosquitoes be desired, it is suggested that the inside surface of the smooth plastic bucket be roughened up. This will enable the mosquito species to grip the surface more easily and therefore will extend their life.
