Bags and Hoops – Insect Nets – Australian Made

A complete net consists of a handle, hoop and bag. Below are the individual aquatic net bags and hoops that are available.

Complete Butterfly Net/Insect Sweep Net packages

  • Please note that we also have complete butterfly nets packages available.
  • Also available are complete insect sweep nets packages.
  • These popular net packages consist of commonly requested combinations, which may be helpful if the list below is overwhelming or confusing.

Construction

The handles and hoops are constructed from aluminium tubing. They are lightweight and strong and will hold up to standard work procedure. All hoops, handles and nets are Australian made.

The bags are manufactured from either polyester, polyganza or micron mesh plankton material.

To obtain a complete net, one must choose the required hoop and bag that matches with each other (e.g. the 456mm hoop with the 456mm bag), plus a handle.

All of the handles (with the exception of E24) are of one fixed length (e.g. E25 is 119cm).

The E24 handle is a collapsible handle. The extended length of this handle is also 119cm but it collapses down to a length of 73cm.

An optional extra for the handles is either the E560 or E561 aluminium extension. This extension will fit all handles. You can use multiple number of extensions to all handles.

How to choose a complete net (bag, hoop and handle):

  1. Select a net hoop or bag from the listing;
  2. Select an appropriate hoop or bag to fit the item chosen in Step 1;
  3. Select a handle, which can be found on this page.

Components – Insect Hoops

The hoops are constructed from strong, lightweight aluminium tubing. The standard hoop consists of one piece, whereas the collapsible type dismantles into two sections. Care must be taken with the collapsible hoops from binding together at the join, which can make it difficult to separate the two halves. It is recommended that the joining section be oiled/greased.

Hoops are available in four (4) sizes: 304mm, 380mm, 456mm and 600mm diameters.

  • E29 Standard Hoop: 304mm diameter
  • E30 Collapsible Hoop: 304mm diameter
  • E31 Standard Hoop: 380mm diameter
  • E32 Collapsible Hoop: 380mm diameter
  • E33 Standard Hoop: 456mm diameter
  • E34 Collapsible Hoop: 456mm diameter
  • E34AS Standard Hoop: 600mm diameter
  • E34A Collapsible Hoop: 600mm diameter

Components – Insect Net Bags

Two different styles of insect net bags are available:

  • Round tapered bags – butterfly net style
Series E38 to E43 has a rounded style taper (butterfly style)
  • Funnel tapered bags – sweep net style
Series E562 to E564 has a funnel style taper (sweep net style)

Both styles are made from either from polyester or polyganza material.

  • Polyester is a very soft but durable material. Mesh size is 0.9mm x 0.3mm. Colour is ivory.
  • Polyganza material is extremely soft and has a fine mesh, which minimises any damage to the specimens. Furthermore, it does not easily snag, tear or run, and grass seeds are easily removed. However, the finer closed mesh of the polyganza bags can result in increased wind resistance when sweeping. Colour is either black or ivory.
  • The denier count for the Polyganza material is 20D x 20D / 100 x 92 Inch.

All the insect net bags are reinforced at the rim with either black or white calico.

The colour selection of the insect net bag depends on individual preference, experience, location and what is being collected.

It has been suggested that the black polyganza bags (coded BG) are suitable for collecting larger insects, such as butterflies and dragonflies.

The ivory coloured polyganza bags (coded BIV) or white mesh bags are suitable for collecting smaller items such as flies, where the lighter backdrop makes it easier to see what has been collected.

As with the hoops, four (4) sizes are available: 304mm, 380mm, 456mm and 600mm in diameter.
