The Merits of the Different Tool Materials
Tool steel is strong, somewhat forgiving (flexible) and holds a very good edge. Of course, it is steel and, therefore, subject to corrosion if used with some solutions. Tool steel tools are the most common microtools ordered.
Stainless steel is recommended if solutions are being used in the application. Stainless steel tools are softer than tool steel or carbide and will not hold an edge as long if used on materials that are hard.
Carbide is usually used in applications where the workpiece is very hard such as hard stainless steel, ceramic, etc. It is very hard but also very brittle and will break or chip under excessive pressure.
