Berlese Funnel
Berlese funnels and Winker selectors are effective tools for separating leaf litter and humus from photophobic insects and arachnids. A couple of styles are available.
The standard Berlese Funnel (EBER), and the Tray-type Berlese Funnels (EMBT5001 – EBTRAY).
EBER: Standard Berlese Tunnel 34cm diameter (Refer Image 2 for photo)
This standard Berlese Funnel is housed in lightweight but sturdy aluminium frame. The funnel (34cm diameter, 35cm high) is made of PE plastic. It has a very sleek internal surface and cannot be easily deformed.
The EBER Standard Berlese Funnel uses a 50-ml Eppendorf tube as the bottom container for collecting extracted organisms. This Eppendorf tube can be removed and a beaker placed underneath the funnel when large extraction amounts are expected.
To hold soil or leaf litter samples, this Standard Berlese Funnel uses a 30-cm diameter PP plastic tray with apertures 7-mm in size. Filters of any smaller apertures can be placed on the tray. At the top of the funnel, a removable pop-up mesh lid (33.5cm diameter) fits perfectly in the rim to stop specimens from escaping or entering the soil and leaf litter samples. Because this top cover is of Polyester netting (96×26 mesh), there is good ventilation of humidity from the sample to the environment.
Other features:
- The unit is easily installed
- Can be used either in the field or laboratory.
- The Standard Berlese Funnel is designed so that it can be hung by strings (NOT included)
- To accelerate extraction of soil organisms, external heat sources (NOT included) can be easily attached to theĀ aluminium frame.
- Main Material: Plastic | Polyethylene
- Mesh Sizes: 96×26 | 680 um opening
- Measurements after assembly – L36.5 x W36.5 x Height 52cm
- Weight 1.55Kgs

EBTRAY: Tray-type Berlese Funnel (44cm diameter)
**DISCONTINUED – LIMITED STOCKS**
The tray-type Berlese funnel is designed to let moisture evaporate naturally through the netting in the top compartment. Without requiring a heat source, it can extract soil-dwelling arthropods, especially when only a thin layer of leaf litter or humus is placed on the tray.
Consists of six items + carrying bags:
- Top compartment: White nylon netting (104 x 94 mesh/square inch)to permit light to enter and moisture to quickly evaporate.
- Net filters: three (3) removable plastic netting (2×2, 3×3, and 6×5 mesh per inch, or 4×4, 6×6, and 11×9 mm in aperture size.
- Tray: White plastic and cut into grille to hold net filters and soil samples.
- Funnel: Nylon cloth.
- Connector: The tube connector is of PE plastic and connects the funnel tray to the collecting tube.
- Collecting Tube: Eppendorf tube (50 ml)
- Carrying bag.
- Dimensions:
- Tray: 37cm inner diameter; 43cm outer diameter; 5cm high.
- Funnel: 44cm outer diameter; 95cm height without collecting tube.
- Lightweight: 500 grams.
- Tray is stackable
When expected extraction amount is large, other containers (e.g. Whirl-Pak sampling bag), may be tied onto the connector.
The bottom funnel is of black, smooth Nylon cloth. The tube connector is of PE plastic and connects the funnel to a collecting tube. Each tray-type Berlese funnel comes with one Eppendorf tube (50 ml) for collection containers.
EMBT5001 Tray-type Berlese Funnel (30cm) **NEW PRODUCT**
Our tray-type Berlese funnel is designed to let moisture evaporate naturally through the netting in the top compartment. It can rapidly extract soil-dwelling arthropods without requiring a heat source, especially when only a thin layer of leaf litter or humus is placed on the tray. This makes the tray-type Berlese funnel a very efficient tool for locations where there is no electricity. Because it is lightweight (320 grams) and the tray is stackable, many can be packed for field trips.
Each tray-type Berlese funnel consists of five parts: top, tray, funnel, connector, and collecting tube. The top compartment is of white Nylon netting (104 x 94 mesh/square inch) to permit light to enter and moisture to quickly evaporate.
The tray is of grey plastic and cut into grille to hold soil samples. The bottom funnel is of black, smooth Nylon cloth. The tube connector is of PE plastic and connects the funnel to a collecting tube. Each tray-type Berlese funnel comes with one Eppendorf tube (50 ml) for collection containers. When expected extraction amount is large, other containers may be tied onto the connector.
The fast-release design of the tube connector permits cleaning of overlooked specimens from bottom opening.
