Fluon – Insect Barrier Paint
Fluon is a PTFE-based liquid that creates a nearly invisible impassable slippery barrier for insects.
How to Apply: Using a foam brush or cotton wool, apply a consistent 5cm to 10cm barrier to the inside top section of your insect’s enclosure to stop them escaping. Avoid fumes by applying outdoors or in a well-ventilated area. Allow to fully dry for 30 minutes before introducing insects. Reapply every few months.
Product Maintenance: Gently roll this product monthly to prevent clumping. Be careful not to vigorously shake or freeze this product as it will irreversibly clump. For maximum life, store at temperatures between 5 and 30°C.
Safety Data Sheet: For information regarding chemical properties, safe handling and safe storage, please see this Safety Data Sheet.
How to Use Fluon to Prevent Insect Escapes:
- Select the Right Surface:
- Fluon works best on smooth, non-porous surfaces like glass, plastic, or polished metal.
- Avoid applying it on porous or rough surfaces, as these reduce its effectiveness.
- Prepare the Enclosure:
- Ensure the area where Fluon will be applied is clean and dry.
- Remove any dust, grease, or debris by wiping the surface with isopropyl alcohol or a mild detergent solution and let it dry completely.
- Application Process:
- Slowly stir the Fluon container well to ensure the product is evenly mixed.
- Use a small brush, sponge, or cloth to apply a thin, even layer of Fluon to the upper inner walls of the enclosure. Typically, a strip of 2–3 inches (5–8 cm) wide is sufficient.
- Allow the Fluon to dry completely before introducing insects. Drying typically takes 10–20 minutes, depending on the product and application thickness.
- Check for Coverage:
- Inspect the application to ensure there are no gaps or uneven areas that insects might exploit.
- Reapply to any missed or thin spots as needed.
Maintenance and Reapplication:
- Frequency:
- Reapply Fluon every 1–3 months, depending on the enclosure’s conditions and the species of insects. High humidity, frequent handling, or wear can reduce its effectiveness.
- Some species, particularly those that produce waxy or oily secretions (e.g., some ants or roaches), may reduce Fluon’s effectiveness more quickly.
- Inspection:
- Periodically check the Fluon-coated area for signs of wear or contamination (e.g., dust, watermarks, or insect residues).
- Clean the surface and reapply Fluon if you notice insects starting to climb the barrier.
Tips for Best Results:
- Avoid letting insects touch the Fluon-coated area until it is fully dry.
- Store Fluon in a sealed container when not in use to prevent it from drying out.
- For enclosures with high humidity, reapply more frequently.
When used correctly, Fluon is a reliable and low-maintenance solution to keep insects contained while ensuring their safety.
